Sod Installation

A real lawn the day we finish

Seed takes weeks. Sod takes a day. We pull off the old lawn, grade the soil, amend where it needs it, then lay quality cool-season sod from Utah growers. By the time you get home, you have a yard that looks like it has been there for years.

Sod beats seed on every front but cost: faster, fewer weeds, longer install window, and an instant cover that stops dust and mud. Seed costs roughly 70% less, but takes 6 to 12 weeks to establish and is limited to spring and fall.

We work in Ogden, Layton, South Weber, Willard, and across Weber and Davis counties.

Best grass types for Northern Utah

Kentucky bluegrass blends

The default Utah lawn. Soft underfoot, traffic-tolerant, recovers well from kids and pets. Most local sod farms grow a bluegrass-rye or bluegrass-fescue blend that handles our heat and cold.

Fescue and fescue blends

More drought-tolerant than straight bluegrass. Deeper roots reach water bluegrass can't. Tall fescue can survive on roughly 25% less water once established.

The Utah State Extension Northern Utah Turfgrass Calendar is the source we follow on watering, fertilizing, and mowing for this climate.

How we install sod

Prep is everything

We strip the old lawn (or rough grade new construction), bring the soil to grade, and amend with compost when the existing soil needs it. Wasatch Front soils are mostly alkaline (pH 7.5 to 8.1) with clay loam below the bench, so prep matters.

Lay it tight

Sod goes down in offset rows with tight seams. We roll the surface to press roots into contact with the soil, then trim the edges clean.

Water plan

We hand you a written watering schedule. The first two weeks need three to four light cycles a day. We dial back from there until you're on a normal weekly schedule by week six. The Slow the Flow weekly watering guide takes over after that.

When to install sod in Northern Utah

The best windows are late August through early October and April through May. Cool soil, warm days, and enough natural moisture to help new roots take. We avoid laying in frozen ground or during peak July heat unless the install is paired with a brand-new sprinkler system.

Pair your sod install with our sprinkler installation or rock and curbing and we will sequence the work to save you time and money.

Smart-water sod

A standard US family of four uses around 400 gallons of water a day, and about 30% of that goes outdoors, per the EPA. Pairing new sod with a smart controller and pressure-regulated heads keeps your lawn green and your bill manageable.

Frequently asked questions

How much does sod cost in Utah?

Most residential installs run $1.20 to $2.50 per square foot delivered and installed, depending on prep work. Removal of an old lawn adds to it. We give a fixed price after walking the property.

How often should I water new sod?

Three to four short cycles per day for the first two weeks. Then every other day for two weeks. Then every third day. By week six you should be on a normal mature-lawn schedule.

Can I walk on new sod?

Light foot traffic is fine after two weeks. Heavy play, pets digging, or mower traffic should wait three to four weeks until the roots knit into the soil.

When can I mow?

Wait until the grass reaches 3 to 4 inches and you cannot lift a corner of any piece. That is usually two to three weeks after install. Mow on a higher setting the first few times.

Will my old sprinklers be enough?

Sometimes. We test pressure, coverage, and head spacing during the quote. If the coverage is uneven we recommend upgrades before the sod goes down.

What about pets?

Keep pets off the new sod for the first two weeks. Once it's rooted, dog urine can still burn the grass. We could look at a hardier blend or a dog-friendly synthetic turf if that is a concern.
